Falmouth, Massachusetts · Buzzards Bay
West Falmouth's resident-only Buzzards Bay gem
A local secret on Buzzards Bay. Small and quiet with postcard sunsets. Limited parking keeps the crowds down — this is where Falmouth residents go when they want their own beach.
Chapoquoit Beach is West Falmouth's locals-only secret — a perfect crescent of Buzzards Bay sand at the end of a peninsular spit, with the open bay on one side and a calm tidal harbor on the other. The parking lot is so small and so strictly resident-stickered that summer visitors essentially can't get in unless they're staying with a Falmouth host. What that buys is a beach that has somehow held onto its 1970s village feel: a single low bathhouse, a wooden lifeguard chair, beachgrass-fringed dunes, and a uniformly resident crowd that recognizes each other. The water faces west across Buzzards Bay, so the sunsets are spectacular and the afternoon swimming is warm and calm. The harbor side is a working scallop and quahog bottom, and you'll see oystercatchers and snowy egrets working the eelgrass at low tide. It's the kind of beach that gets onto best-of-Cape lists despite the town's best efforts to keep it quiet.
