The most famous sunset on Martha's Vineyard
A working fishing village with the most photographed sunset on Martha's Vineyard. Watch the fishing boats come in, grab a lobster roll from Larsen's, and settle in for the show. Arrive early — parking is brutal.
Menemsha is the Vineyard's last real working fishing village, and its public beach — a calm crescent of sand at the mouth of Menemsha Pond on Vineyard Sound — is the unofficial sunset venue of the island. Visitors stake out spots on the sand or the jetty an hour before dusk with coolers, blankets, and lobster rolls from Larsen's Fish Market or the Menemsha Galley a few hundred feet up the dock. The water is gentle and warm enough for kids and casual swimmers; the channel just to the west sees steady boat traffic so swimmers stay on the beach side. Lifeguards are on duty in season. Parking is genuinely brutal — the small town lot fills by early afternoon on summer days, so locals bike in or walk from town. There's a public restroom near the harbor master's office. When the sun drops behind the Elizabeth Islands, the whole crowd applauds. It's the kind of ritual that makes a place.
History
Menemsha served as the fictional 'Amity Harbor' in the 1975 film Jaws.
